A perennial homecoming favorite, his soulful, passionate vocal presence continues to be featured in concerts and videos. He also tours extensively as a solo performer, singing and speaking in churches and auditoriums across the United States and Europe. Taff’s musical journey has truly come full circle, but it’s far from over. As an artist, he is clearly at the top of his form. And as a man, he is the picture of gratitude and grace. “God called me to sing when I was just a little preacher’s kid in Farmersville, California,” Taff says with a smile. “And He’s still calling!”
Clay Crosse grew up in Memphis, Tennessee. He became a Christian at the age of 13. He married his high school sweetheart, Renee. Initially, Clay worked as a courier for FedEx for six years. Clay released his first album, “My Place Is With You”, in 1994. “I Surrender All” was the most successful single from the album.
Clay became known for singles such as “I Surrender All” and “He Walked A Mile In My Shoes” and “Saving The World”. He won the Dove Award for “Best New Artist of the Year” at the 25th GMA Dove Awards in 1995. Clay’s music has a pop soulful style. Nine songs from his first four projects became No. 1 singles. During this period, his “He Walked A Mile” won the 1997 CCM Adult Contemporary Song of the Year. He also collaborated with Bob Carlisle and BeBe Winans on “I Will Follow Christ”, which won a Dove Award for “Inspirational Song of the Year”.
After the release of “Christmas with Clay Crosse”, Clay served as worship pastor for The Love of Christ (TLC) Community Church in Memphis under head pastor, the late Dana Key (of the Christian Rock group DeGarmo and Key). He now serves as worship pastor at Faith Baptist Church, Arlington TN. Clay continues to sing and lead worship at events nationwide.
Clay and his wife Renee have been married since 1990 and have four children, two of which were adopted from China. Along with his singing appearances, Clay and Renee run their ministry, HolyHomes, leading marriage events nationwide as well as serving as spokespeople for Holt International Adoption.
“To know me is to understand that I am a man captured by the Grace of God. My father modeled his faith to me in practical terms: doing the Word without boasting it. He was an incredible man, and although he passed away a several years ago, he was the greatest spiritual influence I’ve ever known.
My first calling from God is not to be a singer, but rather to be Jacque’s husband and a faithful father to Brooke and Evan. To go out and travel around the world and sing for people is a wonderful blessing. I’m humbled to be able to do it, but it’s a perk. If I’m not taking care of business here at home, then I have no business touring and singing.
I want to sing to the couples who are staring a 30-year mortgage in the face. When you hear my songs, I want you to know that the man who is singing has been driven to his knees by many of the same overwhelming stresses and strains that you are experiencing. I want you to allow your heart to break for your wives, husbands and children. Most importantly, I want you to know that there is Hope. His name is Jesus.”
